What do TikTok Levels indicate?
A TikTok level indicates how many coins a specific account has donated to other creators on TikTok. As the gifter level increases, the amount spent also increases. High gifter levels often lead to recognition and respect on the platform. As a streamer, it also allows one to estimate a user's previous willingness to donate.
Criticism
Criticism of TikTok gifter levels often focuses on the potential distortion of social dynamics within the platform. A central point of criticism is that the emphasis on financial contributions in the form of coins may create an unequal distribution of attention and prestige. Anyone, including viewers in the chat, can reach gifter levels, potentially leading to financial resources being seen as the primary measure of contributing to the community. Critics argue that such emphasis on financial contributions may limit the diversity of content presented on TikTok and may disadvantage talented but financially less equipped creators.
Response to Criticism
A public statement could not be found (as of January 2024). However, in 2023 (possibly earlier), the function to turn off one's own level was added. The levels of others remain visible.
