What do TikTok levels indicate?

Criticism

A key criticism is that the emphasis on financial contributions in the form of coins may create an unequal distribution of attention and prestige. Anyone, including viewers in the chat, can achieve donor levels, which can lead to financial resources being seen as the primary measure of contribution to the community. This could supplant the original intention of promoting creative content in favor of monetary evaluation. Critics argue that such an emphasis on financial contributions could potentially limit the diversity of content presented on TikTok and possibly disadvantage talented but financially less well-equipped creators.

No public statement could be found. (As of January 2024) However, the option to hide one's own level was added in 2023 (possibly earlier). The levels of others remain visible.
