What do TikTok levels indicate?

A TikTok level provides information about how many coins a particular account has donated to other creators on TikTok. The higher the donor level, the higher the amount that has been spent. Donor levels often lead to recognition and respect on the platform's livestream feature. Because for streamers, it indicates how much money they are able and willing to donate to them.

Criticism

The criticism about the TikTok donor levels often focuses on the distortion of social interactions within the platform. They may emphasize financial contribution to earn attention and prestige inside online communities. Because within livestream chats this is the only publicly visible metric about commitment, they could be perceived as the most important measurement of contribution to the creator. Combined with unhealthy parasocial relationships towards the creator plus games like 'TikTok Live matches' (in which two creators or more compete for whoever gets the most donations within 5 minutes), those levels can lead to financial pressure.

No public statement could be found. (As of Mai 2026) However, the option to hide one's own level has been added in 2023 (possibly earlier). The levels of others remained visible.
